Non-Directive Play Therapy

child play therapy san luis obispo

Non-directive play therapy, sometimes called child-centered play therapy, is a gentle, kid-led way for children to express their thoughts and feelings through play. In sessions, children choose from toys, art materials, and other creative tools to explore their emotions and experiences in a way that feels natural and safe for them.

As a therapist, my job is to create a welcoming, accepting space where your child can feel free to be themselves without pressure or judgment. By watching and joining in their play, I can better understand what your child is going through and help them work through challenges at their own pace.

This kind of play therapy is especially helpful for kids dealing with things like anxiety, trauma, sadness, or difficulties with friends and family. It gives children a way to share their story and build confidence, all while feeling heard and respected. Play is the primary language for children. Because your child leads the way, it supports their natural ability to heal and grow in a way that feels right for them.

Parent Focused Collateral Sessions

Your involvement is an important part of your child’s therapy. To help support your child’s progress, I typically recommend that parents participate in 1 to 4 collateral sessions each month. The number of sessions depends on both your child’s needs and what feels most helpful for you as a parent. These sessions focus on fostering insight into your child’s inner world, offering practical tools, and addressing any challenges you might be facing at home.

Collateral sessions can include one or both parents and are available either in person or through teletherapy, whichever works best for your family’s schedule. Research shows that when parents are actively engaged in therapy, children experience better outcomes because the support they receive is consistent both in the therapy room and at home.

These sessions are focused on collaboration. Sessions might include: talking through strategies to try, celebrating progress, and making sure you feel confident supporting your child’s emotional growth every step of the way. Your role, as a parent is key, and together we can create a strong foundation for your child to thrive.

Family Therapy Sessions

Family therapy is a way for some or all members of your family to come together and work through challenges with support and guidance. It’s not something every child needs, but it can be a powerful way to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and deepen understanding between family members.

Whether it’s just a few people or the whole family involved, therapy sessions are tailored to what your family needs most. We’ll meet in person to create a safe and supportive space where everyone can feel heard and valued. Together, we’ll explore new ways to connect, solve problems, and recognize patterns that might not be working of your family.

Through family therapy, we can foster deeper understanding between family members and work to create healthier and more supportive ways of interacting, within the family system.
